About Single Port Access (SPA) Surgery

Single Port Access surgery is an advanced minimally invasive procedure in which the surgeon operates almost exclusively through a single entry point, typically the patient’s belly button. All of the instruments necessary for the surgery are used through this single incision. After surgery, the scar is almost completely hidden inside the belly button.

Similar to standard laparoscopic surgeries, the SPA procedure still requires that the patient be under general anesthesia and that certain laparoscopic visualization and techniques are utilized. Traditional laparoscopic surgery requires multiple small incisions on the abdomen. However, with SPA surgery, the entire procedure is performed through the belly button using specialized instruments, leaving almost no visible scar. With this new technique, pain and discomfort are also reduced to a minimum and recovery time is quicker.

This technique is currently used to perform surgery for:

  • Gallbladder

  • Appendix

  • Ovary

  • Colon

While every patient may not be a candidate for SPA surgery, the advanced techniques can be still used to reduce the number of required incisions.
